NBN Construction in South Australia

SA Power Networks has been awarded a three-year contract by NBN Co to roll out fibre optic broadband to serve an area covering about 300,000 premises in Adelaide and regional South Australia.

The contract will see SA Power Networks design and construct the local and distribution network that runs fibre from a local communications exchange (fibre access node or FAN) and down each street in a coverage area.

The contract does not include customer connections work.

SA Power Networks has significant experience in managing, building and maintaining the regulated electricity distribution network and managing and delivering electricity infrastructure projects in the competitive (private/government) market. We also provide telecommunications services to a number of external clients and manage our own telecommunications network encompassing more than 1,000 kilometres of optical fibre used to monitor and manage South Australia's distribution network.

Our NBN project management and construction expertise was demonstrated when we built the NBN first release site in Willunga, 47 kilometres from Adelaide near the McLaren Vale. At the start of June 2013, 63.4 per cent of eligible residents in Willunga were active on the NBN. The average take-up for fibre locations active for more than six months is more than 30 per cent.

The National Broadband Network is aimed at providing the infrastructure to allow every Australian family and business to have the ability to connect to high-speed broadband by 2021.
