Morphett Road - Undergrounding powerlines
What we’re doing
We are undertaking work to support the Department for Transport and Infrastructure's Morphett Road level crossing removals project in partnership with the Tram Grade Separation Project. Our role in the project is to underground a section of our overhead powerlines on Morphett Road, Anzac Highway and Maxwell Terrace. For more detailed information about the project, including details on tram closures, please visit the government website or access the information via https://bit.ly/Morphett_Road
How this affects you
SABD, our civil contractor, began civil works for this project in January 2025. The scheduled works occur overnight from Sunday to Thursday between the hours of 7pm and 5am, and this will continue until early August 2025. The scope of works includes trenching for underground cable installation, boring, laying footings for new Stobie poles, installing the new underground cable, and decommissioning the redundant overhead network.
The work zone covers Morphett Road, Anzac Highway between Morphett Road and Bus Stop 15, and a section of Maxwell Terrace. Installation of a new underground cable, the removal of several Stobie poles, and the removal of four spans of powerline, are scheduled to be completed by Wednesday 26 March 2025. The Department for Transport and Infrastructure will replace any streetlights currently connected to the removed Stobie poles with new light columns.
In December 2025, we will return to the site for road resurfacing and potential clean-up tasks which will take us a few weeks to complete.
To ensure the safety of pedestrians, road users, and our crews there will be periodic reduced speed limits, sign-posted detours, and potential lane closures when our crews or contractors are working. Our crews and traffic management team will work closely with those affected to minimise any inconvenience.
The bicycle path from Morphett Road to Glenelg will also be closed from Saturday 19 April 2025 for up to nine months.
Power outages
A small number of customers will be affected by an overnight power outage on 26 March and they were notified directly.
Construction impacts
There will be noise, vibration and potential dust associated with this work from excavation equipment, other heavy machinery and vehicles. Our crews and contractors will minimise impacts as much as possible, however we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
