Celebrating Leadership in Women's Football

We're proud to continue our long-standing support of the SANFL Women's League and the incredible growth of women's sport across South Australia.

As part of this commitment, we are proud to sponsor the SA Power Networks SANFLW Leadership Award – celebrating the exceptional individuals shaping the future of football both on and off the field. First introduced in 2021, the award honours players whose leadership, character, and contribution away from the game are just as impactful as their performance on it.

Retiring Sturt skipper Maya Rigter won the inaugural award while Norwood captain Alison Ferrall claimed honours in 2022, Double Blues captain Kate Harris in 2023 and Eagles skipper Annie Falkenberg last year.

The award was developed from the Female Personal Pathways program – a series of workshops and forums covering leadership, financial and career development, club culture and mental health education.

SANFL clubs nominated a player based on a number of criteria, including demonstrating care in mentoring younger players at their club, inspiring and encouraging personal development and having values that reflect those of their club.

Players are nominated not only for their achievements, but for the values they live by – mentoring younger teammates, encouraging personal growth, and positively contributing to club culture.

2025 Recipient Jess Bates

This year’s recipient, Jess Bates, embodies everything the award represents. A leader by example, Jess has built a culture of trust, resilience, and inclusion at Glenelg. With 62 SANFLW games under her belt, she holds three Glenelg Best & Fairest awards, a SANFLW Best & Fairest, and Best on Ground at State level – alongside a VFL Best & Fairest with Collingwood.

But Jess’s impact goes far beyond accolades. She’s a mentor, a role model, and a future leader in coaching and recruitment. Her legacy is already being felt across the SANFLW community.

The award was presented to Jess at the SANFL Women’s Best and Fairest on Monday 21 July by SA Power Networks Chief People Officer, Sam Bradley.

Congratulations to the Panthers on their incredible Grand Final win on the weekend).
