ElectraNet is consulting on the future electricity supply for Leigh Creek and Neuroodla/ Hawker as the existing Davenport-Neuroodla-Leigh Creek transmission line reaches the end of its service life.

The consultation is the first stage of the Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T) process, which assesses options to maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply for the future. 

Options being considered

ElectraNet is assessing several options, including: 

• Replacing the existing transmission line 
• Establishing Distributor led stand-alone power systems (SAPS) for Leigh Creek and Neuroodla/ Hawker 
• A combination of transmission network upgrades and SAPS. 

A SAPS is a local electricity system that operates independently of the main grid and typically includes solar generation, battery storage and back-up power generation. 

SA Power Networks' role

While ElectraNet is leading the assessment, SA Power Networks could play a key role if a SAPS-based distributor-led solution is selected. 

As South Australia's electricity distributor, SA Power Networks would be responsible for operating and maintaining the local distribution network and supporting the delivery of reliable electricity services to customers in the region. 

No decision has been made

The project is currently in the consultation stage and while credible options have been identified, interested parties can submit other solutions that address the identified need. Further technical, economic and community assessment will be undertaken as part of the RIT-T process before any decision is made. 

SA Power Networks will continue working with ElectraNet and other stakeholders as the process progresses. 

It is anticipated that a preferred option for the future electricity supply for Leigh Creek and Neuroodla / Hawker will be known by the end of 2026 / early 2027 (subject to the establishment of regulatory obligations).
