An underground water main burst has flooded a substation, affecting some CBD customers. Crews are working urgently to restore supply, with full restoration expected by the end of today.

Substation outage in Adelaide CBD

Update - 9.00am

At approximately 01.45am this morning, an underground water main burst in Grenfell Street in the Adelaide CBD, flooding an SA Power Networks substation in Coromandel Place.

Safety mechanisms activated within the substation to shut it down. This caused an outage for approximately 1200 city customers.

SA Power Networks crews, with the assistance of the Network Operations Centre, were able to reroute other power supplies to quickly restore power to 600 customers. However as of 815am, more than 500 remain without power. 

Crews responded as a matter of priority to Calvary Hospital and power was restored there by 812am. 

The flooding to the substation means it will not be safe for SA Power Networks to restore power to the substation for some time.

Special permits have been issued to SA Water staff to access the basement to pump out the water.

We continue to work on finding alternate supply for customers who remain affected by the outage but we are urging city workers whose offices are affected to work from home if that is possible.

We will be moving mobile generation into the areas of most critical need. We aim to restore supply to all customers by the end of today and we will continue to provide updates as this work progresses.
