Preparing for a planned power interruption

We carry out essential work to maintain, upgrade and connect customers to the electricity network. To do this safely, we sometimes need to interrupt your power supply. We understand this can be inconvenient, so we’re committed to providing clear, timely information and practical advice to help you prepare.

How we notify you of planned power interruptions

If we need to interrupt your power for maintenance, upgrades or connections, we’ll notify you at least four business days in advance with the date, start and finish times.

  • If you're the primary electricity account holder and we have your mobile number, we'll send you an SMS about any upcoming planned interruption.
  • Business customers and those registered for life support will receive a letter in the post, along with SMS and email notifications if their contact details are registered.
  • We'll send you a reminder SMS the day before the planned interruption.
  • Didn’t receive an SMS or email notification? You can update your contact details or register multiple mobile numbers and email addresses by managing your notification preferences on the Sign up for Outage Alerts page.

Preparing for a power interruption

Use this online resource to be prepared for when the power goes out, and make use of the below checklist of simple precautions to prepare for a power interruption.

Life support medical equipment

  • Use the online resource to develop your life support power outage plan.
  • Make sure your equipment is fully charged and ready for the expected interruption duration.
  • Speak with your medical practitioner and have a backup plan or checklist to help guide your preparations.
  • If you're not yet registered as a life support customer, make sure to register through your electricity retailer or directly on our with us on the Life Support Customers and Registration page to receive proper notifications.

Devices and appliances

  • Charge your mobile devices, laptops and any portable batteries.
  • Keep a torch or low volt portable light and spare batteries.
  • If you're at home, leave a light on to tell you when the power is back on.
  • Remember that lifts may not operate during a power interruption, so make sure you have alternative access. Check with your lift provider, building manager, or body corporate for any advice or actions needed before and after the interruption.
  • It’s also a good idea to unplug or power down appliances and sensitive electronic equipment to help prevent damage (e.g. air conditioners, computer servers, etc). Commercial businesses or body corporates should consider switching off lifts, water pumps, and similar systems.
  • You do not need to switch off or adjust any solar installation.

Security and safety

  • Make sure your alarms and security systems will still work without mains power and let your security provider know about the planned interruption.
  • If you have electric gates or garage doors, ensure your vehicle will be accessible, check with your provider for how to use the manual override if needed.

Minimise food spoilage

Avoid opening the fridge or freezer door:

  • Freezers will usually keep food frozen for at least 24 hours if the door remains closed.
  • If the power is out for more than 4 hours, SA Health advises that food in fridges may spoil, for more information see SA Health: Keeping food safe during a power interruption
  • Make a note of when the power went out so you can assess whether your food is still safe to eat.

FAQs

See the FAQs below for what to expect on the day of your planned interruption, helpful information and common questions.

Not always. In some cases, work finishes ahead of schedule and power is restored sooner than expected. Sometimes unexpected issues can occasionally cause delays, which may mean power is restored later than planned. We do our best to minimise disruption and aim to stay within the advised timeframe.

The scheduled time includes preparation and safety checks before work begins. Depending on your location on the network and how the work progresses, some properties may be disconnected later than others.

Sometimes planned interruptions need to be cancelled at short notice due to things like bad weather, network emergencies, or resourcing issues. If that happens, the interruption may be rescheduled, and you’ll be notified with at least four business days’ notice.

Crews might be working in a nearby street or on another part of the network that isn’t visible from your property. If the job is cancelled, we’ll do our best to let the primary account holder know via SMS/email.

Planned interruptions are allowed under national energy laws. Because customers are notified in advance to prepare, compensation is not provided.

Planned interruptions are important for upgrading ageing infrastructure, carrying out maintenance, and connecting new customers. Switching off the power helps keep our crews safe while they work.

These times are sometimes selected due to road permits, safety requirements, or to help reduce the impact during peak demand periods. While most planned interruptions happen during the day, some situations may require work to be done after hours.

If the power is out for more than four hours, food in your fridge may spoil. Try to keep the doors closed to maintain the cold temperature. Freezers typically keep food frozen for up to 24 hours if left unopened.
