Record-Breaking Turnout for Empowered Women in Trades Program

Empowering Women In Trades day 2025 (2) 905 x 428

We recently welcomed 24 women and non-binary participants to our Angle Park Training Centre for a hands-on day designed to spark interest in electrical and powerline careers.

Delivered in partnership with Empowered Women in Trades (EWiT), the program drew record-breaking attendance, with nearly triple the numbers usually seen at similar sessions. The strong turnout highlights the growing appetite for trade careers among people traditionally underrepresented in the industry — and the importance of creating inclusive pathways to support that interest.

The day was part of our broader effort to build a more diverse, representative workforce — and to support more women and non-binary people into trade roles through practical experience, exposure, and connection. It also aligns with our upcoming apprenticeship intake, opening this August for a 2026 start.

Stepping into the Trade

Participants heard first-hand from current and former Trade Skilled Workers (TSWs), before trying a range of practical tasks, including:

  • Going up in an EWP bucket
  • Climbing ladders in harnesses
  • Wiring a junction box
  • Dexterity activities using Glove & Barrier gloves

They also toured the Training Centre, joined discussions around wellbeing and psychological safety, and learnt more about what a career at SA Power Networks could look like.

“One attendee had even travelled from a regional town over three hours away just to be there, which really speaks to the impact of the event,” said Jaki Wain, Inclusion & Diversity Lead.

“Participants shared how helpful and approachable our team was — always smiling and happy to answer questions. You can’t ask for better feedback than that.”

Real Impact, Real Potential

Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees spoke about the value of hearing personal stories, getting to try new activities, and learning about the different directions an apprenticeship can take.

“The room was absolutely buzzing,” said Mel Davis, General Manager at Empowered Women in Trades.
“It was a genuine privilege to support women who may not have considered roles with SAPN otherwise. Programs like this are essential if we’re serious about shifting female representation in trades.”

“It was inspiring to see so many women and supporters of women in trade come together, share their stories, challenge their comfort zones, and create such a positive, uplifting atmosphere,” added Nikita Spice, Apprentice Field Officer.
“Events like this show what’s possible when we work together to open doors.”

Of the 16 participants who completed a feedback survey, 100% said they are now considering applying for an apprenticeship with us.
