Previously, as per the Service and Installation Rules Section 6.2.7, all EV chargers larger than 20A single-phase or 25A 3-phase on a connection with a 100A supply or less required approval via the SA Power Networks Portal.

Moving forward, approval will no longer be required for any charger that is not Vehicle to Grid (V2G) capable. Our Service and Installation Rules will be updated to reflect this in the next release.

This change has been made after feedback from Industry showed that the process was not as streamlined as it could be, with some finding the process unintuitive and clunky. As data on EV Chargers installed in South Australia can be sourced through other channels, the Portal approval process can now be retired.

What you need to do

While a Portal application is no longer required for basic EV chargers (referred to as Level 2 chargers) an eCoC is still required for each install.

Vehicle to Grid (V2G) chargers follow SA Power Networks Embedded Generation installation requirements. This includes completing a pre-installation application for the device via our Portal. Refer to this user guide for how to create a V2G application. 

In the absence of specific requirements for bidirectional EVs, bidirectional EV chargers, including inverters capable of V2G, are currently treated by SA Power Networks as battery energy storage systems (BESS).
