Community Grant Helps to Improve Safety in the APY Lands

APY Lands Shelter Project Community Grants Hero 905 x 428

With the help of a community grant from SA Power Networks, volunteers from the Rotary Club of Onkaparinga have constructed essential shelters in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. These shelters serve as bus stops for the Greyhound buses traveling between Adelaide and Alice Springs.

Previously, the sites had inadequate facilities, leaving travellers exposed to harsh weather conditions. Long waits are common, often lasting several hours, and the lack of shade, water, and communication options pose significant safety risks. The remoteness of the area and frequent extreme heat exacerbates these dangers for travellers.

So far, Rotary Onkaparinga have built two shelters with the grant funding, with plans for two more. Bringing the number of shelters constructed as part of the project to eight so far. These shelters provide seating and access to water via rainwater tanks, significantly improving the waiting experience.

Before construction, the Rotary Club sought approval from the local Indulkana community to ensure the site had no sacred significance. The project has been well-received, addressing critical needs and enhancing safety for all travellers using the bus service at this junction on the Stuart Highway. The Rotary Club of Onkaparinga has also recently been awarded the ‘The Andamooka’ Community Project Award as part of SA Volunteer Awards, which recognises a community or group volunteer project of significant community benefit.

The new amenities at this once poorly equipped site have transformed it into a safer, more comfortable waiting area, demonstrating the incredible impact of community-driven initiatives.

Applications for our 2024 Community Grants Program have closed, and we are excited to announce this year’s recipients in July!
