Notification of works

Undergrounding powerlines - St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide

Project update 29th May 2025.

We appreciate the patience and support of those who live and work closest to our work zone, or travel through it.

The joint power undergrounding project is progressing well.

  • Nightworks Sunday 1st, Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd June

St Vincent Street will have a single lane open from 7pm each night until around 6am near the pedestrian crossing at 301 St Vincent Street with STOP/ GO traffic safety management.

There is likely to be significant noise between 8pm and midnight around this work zone.

The noise disruption will continue until 6am however we aim for the worst to be finished within our first few hours of work.

We are unable to complete this part of work during the day when St Vincent Street traffic is too busy for a single lane of traffic.

Our lighting will be aimed away from residences as much as possible. You may wish to consider taping heavy black garbage bags to windows to help reduce light impacts if you live in the vicinity.

  • Day works, Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm, with occasional work outside these times

Our civil contractor Mahcon will continue work until early August.

Our electrical contractor PhaseBlue will be doing underground cabling works from 9th June to 11th July.

  • Further night work Tuesday 15th, Tuesday 22nd, Thursday 31st July, Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th August 8pm to 6am

There will be typical construction noise with heavy vehicles, floodlights, flashing safety lights, and traffic restrictions, as our powerline crews energise the new underground cables and remove old Stobie poles and overhead powerlines.

We will notify customers of any power outage (starting 9pm) that will affect them, usually with two weeks’ notice.

What we’re doing

We are working with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield Council to underground powerlines along St Vincent Street between Wauwa Street and Jubilee Street, Port Adelaide. We are proud to partner with the local and state government in beautifying significant areas through councils’ streetscaping initiatives.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport will be installing new public light columns along St Vincent Street replacing the public lights connected to the redundant Stobie poles.

How this affects you

From Monday 31st March to Monday 9th June 2025, Mahcon Civil, our civil contractor, will be trenching for the new underground network between Wauwa Street and Jubilee Street along the footpath on the Northern side of St. Vincent Street and across three road sections of St Vincent Street, extending to 2 Webster Street where we’ll lay the foundations for a new Stobie pole.

Civil work will primarily occur during the day between 7am and 5pm. Some minor civil work will be completed at night however the specific dates have not yet been scheduled.

We'll replace the Stobie pole in front of 2 Webster Street in late May with the underground cables along St Vincent and Webster Street to be installed in June. In July, we will transfer customers from the existing overhead network to the new underground network and remove all redundant low voltage overhead powerlines. We will then return in August to energise the new lighting columns and remove the redundant Stobie poles.

A limited number of private electricity connections will need to be altered as part of this project. There is no cost to those customers for this work. Our contracted licensed electrician will let you know in advance if this affects your property to arrange access and to confirm the dates of any work.

For the duration of civil works part of the footpath on the northern side of St Vincent Street between Jubilee Street and Wauwa Street will be temporarily closed and fenced off with sign posted detours for pedestrians. Our civil contractor will also be using 13 of the 25 car parks located between 306 St Vincent Road and Wauwa Street for their equipment and vehicles, this will be a rolling carpark closure and will shift from east to west as the civil works progress. Bus stop 39 on the north side of St Vincent Street will be temporarily blocked while the civil crews are working. The transit authority will notify passengers of alternative arrangements.

To ensure everyone's safety, there will be traffic control in place with temporary speed limit reductions, detours, and potential lane closures. Our teams will work closely with those affected to minimise inconvenience.

Work hours and dates may vary due to weather conditions or unforeseen events outside of our control.
