How to get the most out of your solar energy system

Solar panel article 905 x 428

Installing a solar energy system is a great way to save money on your electricity bills and help the environment. But to get the most value from your solar panels, it's important to think about how you use the energy you produce.

Here are some simple tips to help you make the most of your rooftop solar system in South Australia.

Get the most from your solar panels

To get the best results from your solar system, you need to make sure your panels are working as efficiently as possible. Here’s how:

  • Consider the direction of the panels: In Adelaide, north-facing panels produce the most electricity during the day. But if you use more power in the morning or late afternoon, east- or west-facing panels might work better for you.
  • Keep them clean: Dust, dirt, and bird droppings can block sunlight and reduce how much power your panels produce. In most cases, rainfall is enough to keep panels clean but consider cleaning them during dry spells when dirt and dust could accumulate.
  • Trim trees and branches: Shade from trees or buildings can stop your panels from getting enough sunlight. Make sure your panels are in full sun as much as possible.
  • Pick the right size system: If you’re installing a new solar system, choose a size that matches your needs. Also consider future needs. For example, will you install a battery soon?

Once your panels are producing as much energy as possible, the next step is to use that energy in a smart way.

Use your solar energy smarter

The best way to save money is to use the maximum amount of electricity you generate during the day when your solar panels are producing power. In Adelaide, this is usually between 10am and 4pm. Here are some tips to help you use your energy smarter:

  • Make your home energy-efficient: Simple changes like sealing windows, improving insulation, and using energy-efficient appliances can help you save energy and money. Good thermal efficiency also improves your ability to pre-cool or pre-heat your home during cheaper periods, because your home will hold the temperature for longer.
  • Shift when you use power: Try to run appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and pool pumps during the day when your solar panels are generating power. You can do this manually or use smart technology like Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) or smart appliances to schedule or automate running times.
  • Get help from government programs: Programs like the Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program could help you undertake energy efficiency home upgrades, buy energy-efficient appliances or install a battery.
  • Check your electricity plan: Make sure you’re on the right electricity plan for your needs. Some plans, like Time-of-Use (ToU) tariffs, reward you for using power at certain times of the day.

If you can shift your consumption, consider a Time of Use Tariff

Time of Use (ToU) tariffs charge different prices for electricity depending on the time of day. If you’re on a ToU plan, you can save money by using electricity during cheaper times. Here’s how it works:

  • Peak times: Electricity is most expensive during peak times, which is usually 6am–10am and 3pm–1am on weekdays. If you're keen to reduce costs, using fewer large appliances like air-conditioners and clothes dryers during these hours can help, unless you power them from the solar energy you generate.
  • Off-peak times: Electricity from the grid is usually cheapest between 1am–6am.
  • Solar sponge times: Some energy retailers offer special low rates during the middle of the day (10am–3pm) when solar energy generation is at its peak. If your plan includes a solar sponge rate, it’s a great time to run extra appliances like your dishwasher or washing machine. It’s also a great time to charge a home battery, if you have one, and store that free energy (from solar) or cheap energy (from the grid) for use during the peak time.

In summary

To make the most of your rooftop solar system, focus on three key things:

  • Maximise your solar production: Keep your panels clean, free from shade, and facing the right direction.
  • Use more energy during the day: If possible, shift your energy use to when your panels are producing the most power.
  • Take advantage of tariffs: Understand your electricity plan and use power during cheaper times.

By following these tips, you can lower your electricity bills and reduce your impact on the environment.
