Together we engineer - celebrating International Women in Engineering Day 2025

We're proud to recognise International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) - a day dedicated to honouring the incredible contributions of women engineers and inspiring the next generation of female talent.
Held annually on 23 June, INWED celebrates the progress being made in a traditionally male-dominated field, while acknowledging the work still to be done. This year’s theme, ‘Together we engineer’, highlights the collective effort to build a more inclusive and diverse profession.
At SA Power Networks, we’re committed to playing our part by creating opportunities for women in STEM and showcasing the impact engineers can make.
Through partnerships with programs like the Women in STEM Careers Program at the University of Adelaide, and participation in Women in Engineering Panels and Career Expos, we’re supporting pathways for women into engineering careers. Our Pathways team has also extended outreach to younger students, recently delivering a STEM session at St Aloysius College for over 80 Year 6 girls.
Today, 60 women work in engineering roles at SA Power Networks – including five undergraduates and nine in leadership positions – a significant shift from 1999 when just one woman engineer was employed.
We also spoke to Gethmi Karunanayaka, one of our newest engineering graduates, about what drew her to the profession.
“It’s a career where you can turn ideas into solutions that shape the world. With the growing urgency around climate change and energy transition, I saw engineering as the best path to drive real, large-scale impact, especially in the renewable energy space,” said Gethmi.
“SA Power Networks’ role in leading South Australia’s energy transition and its strong focus on innovation and future technologies really inspired me. The best part so far has been working on real-world projects that make a difference, while learning from a supportive and forward-thinking team.”
As we celebrate INWED 2025, we reflect on the progress made – and the work still ahead – to ensure more women can see themselves in engineering and be supported to thrive.
