Upcoming changes to embedded generation like-for-like replacements

Notice to industry web news hero

To date, customers replacing older embedded generation units with a similarly sized replacement system have been permitted to follow a process that does not align with our Technical Standards, or in some cases, the Department of Energy and Mining's legislative requirements. We are updating our Portal to ensure all replacement systems are processed in accordance with the correct technical and regulatory obligations. These changes will come into effect on 1 July 2026.

Like-for-like Warranty Replacements are defined by our Technical Standard 129 (TS129), Section 4.3.4 as follows:

Like-for-like warranty replacement of an inverter will not be required to be compliant with SA Power Network’s current Technical Standards unless the capability exists within the replacement inverter. In this case the settings must be updated to the current standard, in particular the power quality response mode settings (refer Section 4.9). Like-for-like warranty replacement will be defined as equipment with the same manufacturer and model.

Replacement inverters must still comply with all necessary safety standards and requirements. Any changes made to an installation must be advised to us via the SEG application, including any inverter replacements under warranty or increases in panel capacity.

The Portal currently allows replacements with different manufacturers and models to proceed as like-for-like as long as the capacity has not increased, which does not align with the technical standard.

The Portal will be updated to only allow like-for-like replacements as per the technical standard, therefore if the inverter being replaced is of the exact same manufacturer and model then it will be exempt from:

  • Relevant Agent requirements
  • Changing Export plan
  • Technical Standard requirements (unless the capability exists within the replacement)

If the inverter is being replaced with a unit of a different manufacturer or model it will be classified as a replacement, and will be required to:

  • Comply with Relevant Agent / Dynamic Exports requirements
  • Change Export plan
  • Comply with Technical Standard requirements

Adding a battery or adjusting the panels on existing inverters will remain exempt.
