SA Power Networks Community Grants: Port Pirie Community Garden Shelter

2025 Community Grant recipient Port Pirie Community Garden Shelter. 905 x 428

At the Port Pirie Community Garden Shelter, the focus is about more than growing plants, it's about growing community. The garden welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds who want to learn about greening, gardening, and becoming more self-sufficient. With more than 30 active members, including retirees, people with disabilities and volunteers from across the local community, the garden has become an important space for connection, learning, and wellbeing.

The garden also hosts visiting groups such as schools, kindergartens, scouts and local organisations, giving people hands-on opportunities to plant, weed, water and harvest produce together.

Creating a space for everyone

Unfortunately, until recently, the garden had no sheltered area. Volunteers often worked outdoors in extreme conditions, including seeding days in temperatures approaching 40°C.

Thanks to the SA Power Networks Community Grants Program, the shelter received a $1,800 grant which went towards erecting a free-standing shelter within the garden. The new structure now provides a shaded place for volunteers and visitors to work, rest and plan activities, while also protecting young seedlings as they grow.

For many members, the difference is already clear.

Trevor, an 81-year-old member, says the shelter is especially important for his health.
“I’ve had skin cancers removed, so being able to sit safely under the new shelter makes a big difference.”

Others have also welcomed the addition.

“The shelter is great – thank you so much. It is very well used,” said David.

“Absolutely love it! Out of the sun and rain – thank you.” Said John

Supporting environmental projects

The garden also plays an important role in environmental restoration. A major focus for members is their partnership with the Trees For Life program. Each year the group raises around 1,200 seedlings, which are grown over six months and supplied to support rehabilitation projects and local councils.

Garden member Philip says the shelter is already helping with this work.
“Terrific – we are now out of the summer sun as we sow the 1,200 seeds for our Trees For Life project.”

Beyond environmental work, the garden shares fresh produce with local organisations including community kitchens and charities, as well as families in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Supporting communities across South Australia

The Port Pirie Community Garden Shelter project is one of many initiatives supported through the SA Power Networks Community Grants Program. By providing practical infrastructure for volunteers, the grant is helping ensure the garden remains a welcoming place where people can learn, grow and support one another.
