In 2022, we continued our support of the Science and Engineering Challenge through our newly established Community Grants program.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is an annual event which inspires and encourages high school students to take further studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects.

Designed for Year 9 and 10 students, the day engages attendees in practical, hands-on applications of STEM through design-and-build challenge activities.

The event is conducted annually in over 53 regions across Australia, including every state and territory – engaging around 30,000 students.

In South Australia, 51 schools and over 1,200 students from across the State competed in the Science and Engineering Challenge in 2022.

Challenge days were held in the Riverland, Mount Gambier and Adelaide metro – with around 8 schools competing each day.

Over the two weeks, challenges included designing an earthquake-proof tower, building a hovercraft or bridge, providing electricity to a city or creating an environmentally friendly house.

Overall, Pembroke High School won the South Australian State Final and participated in the National Final in Bendigo on 21 October 2022, placing third overall.

David Lewis, Chair for Science and Engineering Challenge SA, views the challenge as an important calendar event in supporting the pursuit of STEM subjects for students.

“The future prosperity of Australia depends very much on keeping up, in fact leading where possible, the world in science and technology,” said David.

“The Challenge allows students to get involved with STEM from a young age in a fun and engaging way.

Research has shown that practical engagement in science-based activities, such as the Challenge, increases interest in studying STEM subjects in later years and even in career aspirations, particularly for females.”

This year the Science and Engineering Challenge was awarded the United Nations Day Honour for 2022 in recognition of the program's longstanding efforts to advance inclusive and accessible STEM education and engagement in Australia.
